Head and Chest CT: We require you have nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to the scan. Abdomen and Pelvis CT: We require you have nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to scan. You are required you to drink barium, which can be obtained in the Imaging Department the day before the exam. One half bottle is taken 2 hours before the exam, the other half is taken 1/2 hour before the exam. Exam Day: Arrive early to complete the registration process. CT Scans of the head (brain) require removal of jewelry, hair pins, etc. CT Scans of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis require changing into a patient gown. When you are brought into the CT room, if I.V. contrast is to be given, you will be asked to sign a consent form: If you have allergies or previous history of reaction to I.V. contrast, please let us know. Patients taking Meformin (Glucophage) must be off this medication for 48 hours after the exam. If you are having your abdomen or pelvis scanned, you will be given more oral contrast. You will be positioned on the table for the scan and an I.V. will be started, if required. The table will be moved into the scanner and the exam will begin. Instruction will be provided regarding how to hold your breath. During the exam the table will move very gently and slowly. The exam takes from 10 to 45 minutes. When
completed, the technologist will assist you off the table and you will
be able to change and leave. Results of your exam will be forwarded to
your referring physician, who will explain them. |
